Do Matki

DO MATKI follows Adam and Piotr, adult twin brothers who live in a home for people with intellectual disabilities — a castle nestled on a hill in the Polish countryside. While the institution provides peace and structure, it also imposes a quiet isolation and a deep sense of longing for a family that feels out of reach. Like many of their fellow residents, the brothers yearn for love and recognition, especially from their mother. This silent yearning shapes the film’s emotional course as Adam and Piotr prepare for a pilgrimage to Częstochowa, a city known for its devotion to the Black Madonna, but also the place where their mother lives.

Do Matki is a tangible film that focusses on the experiences of Adam and Piotr and their fellow residents. The camera observes with gentleness, seeks wonder in the everyday and reveals beauty in what is often seen as banal. The film is a fairy-tale story with all the necessary ingredients: twins, a castle, forests and a city and a mother figure that are difficult to reach. At the same time, it is a social story about seemingly invisible people and a society that often overlooks them. A poetic journey towards love, recognition, and connection.

After Zlata (Visions du Réel, Film Fest Gent), Do Matki is the second film by Polish/Belgian filmmaker Mattias Bavré. It will be an intimate film that in its simplicity wants to seek out and convey the complexities but also the beauty in the brothers' world.
